Utility Dive Publishes Article by Sakuu CTO on Manufacturing Safer Batteries
Sakuu Chief Technology Officer Karl Littau penned an article for Utility Dive to point out that there is room to improve the safety and performance of rechargeable batteries while reducing cost. It’s all about innovation in manufacturing.
Karl explains how devastating fires at battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities are preventable through improved battery "dry process" manufacturing — which can now be done cost-effectively and at scale.
"Lithium-ion battery cells made with composite conductive materials — or polymeric current collectors (PCC) — are built with a different architecture," he wrote. "If a PCC battery fails, it’s a warranty issue. No one needs to call the fire department. ... The Vistra fire represents a safety issue that only exists because 20th century manufacturing equipment doesn’t produce 21st century batteries."
