Sakuu Activity Update

We are working on fulfilling the first orders for Kavian, our innovative dry electrode manufacturing platform, and have already delivered hundreds of meters of dry electrode to cell manufacturing and EV customers.

The Kavian 2000 platform is currently dry printing cathodes and anodes in NCM, NCA, LFP, graphite, and silicon-graphite chemistries on current collector foil, and we have successfully validated the electrochemical performance of our dry-printed electrodes, performing equal or better than wet-coated electrodes.

Sakuu’s customers have confirmed after internal testing that Sakuu’s dry printed cathodes and anodes enable higher cell capacity with the same amount of active material compared to their wet-cast-electrodes.

Current dry-process technology targets electrode production speeds of between 25 and 50 meters per minute at present. For context, standard document printing achieves speeds of up to 100-square-meters per minute, and Sakuu has filed patents enabling the same speed for dry electrode printing.

For battery electrode producers, Kavian benefits include:

  • 100% elimination of toxic solvents and water
  • 55% reduction of CO2 emissions
  • 60% smaller footprint for manufacturing floor space
  • 20% reduction in capital equipment costs
  • 56% savings in utility operating costs

Sakuu’s dry-printing process also enables thicker, performant electrode layers, delivering savings upwards of 20% on current-collector costs and resulting in a direct reduction of the bill of material for every battery cell.

And in addition to electrochemical battery electrodes, we’re also testing Kavian use for dry printing electrostatic supercapacitor electrodes, since supercapacitors help meet the unique power needs of AI data centers and demand is surging.

All of which helps explain why we landed on Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas 2025 list honoring businesses driving meaningful change in the world! At Sakuu, we’re proud to deliver the technology that is transforming manufacturing to power a more sustainable future.

If you’d like to learn more about what we do at Sakuu and what’s new in innovative electrode manufacturing technology, we’ll be in attendance at a couple of key industry events this fall:

  • Chief Product Officer Arwed Niestroj will be in Detroit representing Sakuu and exhibiting in Booth #3752 at The Battery Show, which runs October 6–9.
  • Dr. Karl Littau, Sakku’s chief technology officer, will be in Las Vegas presenting at the ASTM International Conference on Advanced Manufacturing (ICAM25), which runs October 6–10. He’ll also be presenting at the Materials Research Society Fall Meeting and Exhibit (MRS 2025) in Boston on December 4.
